The UAE announced the launch of a polar science project during the plenary session of the UAE Government’s Annual Meeting 2024. Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and Chair of the “UAE Polar Mission steering Committee”, presented details of the project. This is reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a Partner of TV BRICS.
The project incorporates the views of scientists, experts and diplomats to identify key research priorities for scientific, technological and commercial applications. The first steps include establishing a “Polar Research Centre” at Khalifa University, establishing strategic international partnerships, signing relevant agreements and participating in international polar missions.
Almehiri stressed that these efforts confirm the UAE’s recognition of the strategic importance and global impact of polar science. Given the huge potential of polar regions, despite the existing challenges, she noted that the project aims to train Emirati scientists to participate in international polar missions.
