Zimbabwe’s macadamia exports surge by 53% as industry eyes Chinese market

Zimbabwe’s macadamia exports experienced a significant 53 per cent growth, rising from 5 million kilograms in 2023 to 8 million kilograms in 2024. With this expansion, exporters are now targeting the lucrative Chinese market to maximise profitability, as reported by The Herald, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), the volume of exported macadamia nuts increased from 5,244,665 kilograms in 2023 to 8,026,853 kilograms last year, the source claims.

The Zimbabwean government is negotiating a trade protocol with China to capitalise on increased production levels. He stressed that access to the Chinese market would significantly boost demand and pricing for Zimbabwean macadamia nuts.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is making strides in securing international market access for its agricultural produce. Last year, the country signed a protocol with China for the export of fresh avocados. This followed a successful citrus export agreement signed three years ago, which resulted in Zimbabwean citrus entering the Chinese market in 2023.

This trade expansion aligns with discussions between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and President Xi Jinping, who met ahead of the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Their bilateral engagements resulted in the signing of 17 agreements and memorandums of understanding across multiple sectors, including agriculture, underscoring Zimbabwe’s commitment to enhancing its trade relations with China.
