India Explores Localised Production of Su-57 Fifth-Generation Fighter

Jets Abu Dhabi, 17 February 2025 – In a significant development at the ongoing IDEX 2025 defence exhibition, India is reportedly considering the localised production of the Russian Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets.

The announcement was made by Dmitry Shugaev, Director of the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, underscoring India’s interest in enhancing its indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.

Earlier this month, Alexander Mikheev, Director General of Rosoboronexport, confirmed that Russia had proposed a comprehensive cooperation package for the Su-57E project. This proposal includes the supply of fully assembled aircraft, the establishment of joint production facilities in India, and assistance in developing an Indian fifth-generation fighter jet.

“India is actively reviewing the proposal,” Shugaev stated during a briefing at IDEX 2025. The localisation initiative aligns with India’s Make in India programme, which aims to reduce reliance on imported defence equipment and foster domestic defence production. Geopolitical Context The news comes as global defence markets grow increasingly competitive.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced plans to boost American military exports to India, including the provision of advanced F-35 fighter jets. These developments highlight India’s strategic position in balancing international defence partnerships to secure its long-term security interests.
