Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, announced that the sector is undergoing major improvements to support the country’s expanding economy. Speaking at the 100-day performance review of the Council of Ministers, attended by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Alemu highlighted the progress made in the first quarter of 2017 under Ethiopia’s comprehensive macroeconomic reform programme.

The minister stated that efforts have been focused on enhancing logistics and transport infrastructure to ensure the timely delivery of crucial goods such as fertiliser to farmers and inputs to manufacturers. Significant strides have also been made in the development of dry ports, as well as sea, land, and air transport systems. In response to Ethiopia’s growing agricultural sector, new storage facilities for perishable products are currently under construction. Additionally, the ministry is working to modernise public transport services, improving transparency and accountability.

Efforts to diversify port services for import-export trade have also been initiated, helping to reduce potential disruptions in Ethiopia’s trade routes. As part of this initiative, Ethiopia has enhanced road connectivity with neighbouring countries, reinforcing its role as a regional trade hub.
