Ethiopia has achieved a major milestone in agricultural development, transitioning from a wheat importer to a self-sufficient producer. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.
Speaking at the International Conference on Irrigation and Climate Resilient Production 2025 in Addis Ababa, President Taye Atske-Selassie emphasised that Ethiopia’s achievement demonstrates Africa’s ability to sustain itself.
He highlighted the role of the Green Legacy Initiative, which has facilitated the planting of over 40 billion trees, increasing the nation’s forest coverage to 23.6 per cent. This environmental effort is closely linked to agroforestry and food self-sufficiency.
The conference, attended by experts, policymakers and stakeholders from Africa and beyond, provided a new platform for knowledge sharing in irrigation and climate adaptation.
Among the main issues on the agenda were improving water use efficiency, strengthening food systems and ensuring the long-term sustainability of agriculture.
In the near future, Ethiopia intends to improve its irrigation strategies and build resilience to climate change through government initiatives.
