Rosatom, the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, is currently engaged in advanced discussions with Indian counterparts regarding a new suite of projects focused on peaceful nuclear energy. The dialogue is centred on the development and expansion of nuclear energy infrastructure in India, as well as technological cooperation that would foster innovation in the sector.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum, which is being held at the Far
Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok from September 3-6, Rosatom’s Director General, Alexey Likhachev, highlighted the strategic importance of these talks. “We are actively negotiating with our Indian partners on a comprehensive package of projects. Historically, we have established systemic agreements that are renewed every six to seven years, encompassing mutually beneficial parameters for both sides,” Likhachev stated.
The prospective agreements involve the supply of nuclear power plants, advanced equipment, and fuel from Rosatom, while India is expected to facilitate the localisation of certain technological solutions and collaborate with Rosatom on pioneering technological developments. “It’s crucial that we maintain a balanced partnership. Both sides stand to benefit from the exchange of expertise and the implementation of new technologies,” Likhachev added. These discussions mark a significant milestone in the long-standing nuclear energy cooperation between Russia and India. The two nations have a rich history of collaboration in this field, with Russia playing a pivotal role in the development of India’s nuclear power capabilities.
The Eastern Economic Forum has once again proven to be a vital platform for fostering international cooperation in various sectors, including nuclear energy. The ongoing talks between Rosatom and India are expected to pave the way for future agreements that will not only enhance energy security but also contribute to the sustainable development goals of both nations.
