Iran launches first direct cargo flight to Russia

Less than a month after enacting a free trade deal with the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Iran has initiated its first direct cargo flight to Russia.

According to Press TV, a partner of TV BRICS, the cargo route between Rasht, a city in northern Iran, and Moscow began operations a day earlier following a ceremony at Rasht Airport. The launch marks a significant step in implementing the free trade agreement between Iran and the EAEU and reflects expanding aviation ties between Iran and Russia.

The free trade deal was ratified by Iran’s parliament on 3 March, authorising the implementation of the agreement signed in 2023. Under the deal, Iran can export nearly 87 per cent of its goods to EAEU member states: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia without tariffs.
