In a significant milestone for Indo-Russian defence cooperation, JSC “Kalashnikov Concern,” the renowned Russian arms manufacturer, announced the successful development of tools and equipment for the serial production of the AK-203 rifle in India. This marks the first time that India has commenced large-scale production of the iconic Kalashnikov rifles on its soil.

During the first half of 2024, Kalashnikov Concern manufactured over 3,000 units of advanced technological equipment and tools, including stamps, cutting appliances, and other specialised machinery. These tools are integral to the licensed production of the AK-203 rifle in India, as part of a broader defence agreement between the two nations. The company also produced more than 2,000 military gauges essential for field testing the rifles, ensuring they meet stringent quality and performance standards. The tools and equipment have been produced and shipped to India in a timely and complete manner, as emphasised by Alan Lushnikov, President of JSC Kalashnikov Concern.

“We are actively developing partnerships with our colleagues in India. The tools were manufactured and shipped on time and in full — this is our priority task, which we are addressing under the current contract,” said Lushnikov.

The AK-203 rifles, designed for the Indian Armed Forces, are being produced in a joint Indo-Russian venture located in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. This initiative aligns with India’s “Make In India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) programs, aiming to enhance the localization of defence manufacturing.

Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rosteс State Corporation, noted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “The production has been deployed in India in full compliance with the Make In India and Atmanirbhar Bharat programs.” Earlier this month, the joint venture delivered 35,000 Kalashnikov rifles to the Indian Army, further solidifying the defense partnership between the two nations.
