Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that his government aims to produce at least 30,000 tonnes of wheat in the current fiscal year. Abiy Ahmed detailed the government’s priorities for the period 2024-2025, forecasting a gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 8.4 per cent, with agriculture as the key sector. The minister said agriculture could exceed expectations due to the progress made in the first few months of the financial year.
Agriculture is expected to grow by 6.1 per cent, with crop production increasing by 6.6 per cent, as reported by Fana Broadcasting Corporate, a partner of TV BRICS. Ethiopian government plans to produce 150 million chicks, 12 billion litres of milk, 218,000 tonnes of chicken meat, 8 billion eggs, more than 12,000 tonnes of fish and 297,000 tonnes of honey.
Ethiopia, the world’s third largest coffee producer, plans to export between 450,000 and 500,000 tonnes of coffee this year and open 20 tea processing factories. The country has also stepped up production of sesame, almonds, soya beans and bananas, building its agricultural capacity to support economic growth and boost exports.
