Government of Zimbabwe educates rural communities in climate smart farming practices

Government of Zimbabwe, through the Smallholder Agriculture Cluster Project (SACP), is training rural communities in Binga district (Matabeleland North Province) on climate smart farming techniques. The initiative supports the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development’s commitment to climate resilient infrastructure. This is reported by New Ziana.

Godfrey Nehanda, the National Project Coordinator for SACP, emphasises the importance of climate smart farming for food security in the districts. One climate smart farming method such as keyhole gardening is used by farmer Exodus Munkuli of Sianzyundu village in Binga. “I have been using keyhole gardening as a climate-smart farming method. This technique has provided food for our table […]. The raised beds retain more water, allowing my plants to thrive even under the scorching Binga sun,” said Exodus Munkuli.

Keyhole gardening is a traditional yet innovative approach that is suitable for arid areas and requires significantly less water than conventional raised beds. Its design ensures effective moisture retention.
