South Africa and the African Union Commission (AUC) will hold a key consultative meeting on the G20 on October 10, 2024, in Pretoria. The meeting will be led by Zane Dangor, Director-General of South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and South Africa’s G20 Sherpa, alongside Ambassador Albert Muchanga, the African Union’s G20 Sherpa and Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry, and Mineral Resources. This is reported by the official website of South Africa’s Department for International Relations and Cooperation.
Expected topics of discussion at this meeting include approaches to the G20, areas for mutual cooperation in shaping the outcomes of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and key priorities for South Africa’s G20 presidency, which starts on 1 December 2024. Additional opportunities for collaboration during South Africa’s leadership of the G20 will also be discussed.
South Africa’s G20 presidency, starting on 1 December 2024, represents a unique opportunity to place Africa’s development priorities at the forefront of the global agenda. This leadership role will enable South Africa to advocate for the Global South’s economies and build on the successes of previous G20 presidencies from Indonesia, India, and Brazil. The G20 Summit in India, held in September 2023, granted the African Union permanent membership in the G20. This inclusion will empower African nations to have greater influence and ownership over key decisions within the G20 agenda.
