The National ID Programme of Ethiopia has announced activities to mark 2024 International Identity Day under the theme “Celebrating the Right to Be Visible.” This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

This year’s theme focusses on the importance of inclusive identity systems that help empower individuals and communities, according to a press release from the programme. From September 13 to 20, the National ID Programme has scheduled various events, including a series of high-level webinars in collaboration with the Ethiopean Office of the Prime Minister and Government Communications Service. There will also be a celebration of Identification Day 2024 and a mass registration of citizens at key locations across the country.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of a comprehensive digital identity system for good governance, enhancing security, promoting social inclusion, and improving access to basic services. One of the highlights of the celebration will be a series of webinars where distinguished experts from international organisations, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Innovation and Technology and the National Bank of Ethiopia, will discuss the role of digital identification in transforming governance through digital technologies.
