In January 2024, India shipped its first batch of bananas to Russia. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
The result of joint work was the shipment of the first batch of bananas from India to Russia in January 2024, and the next shipment is scheduled for the end of February this year, the service said. It is noted that export volumes will increase.
According to the agency, issues related to the supply of Indian fruit to Russia were discussed with representatives of the Department of Plant Protection, Quarantine and Storage of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of India.
The country has expressed interest in expanding supplies of bananas, mangoes, pineapples, papaya and guava to the Russian market.
The Indian side will soon send the official list of fruits to be exported to Russia to the service. In turn, Rosselkhoznadzor will notify its colleagues of the phytosanitary requirements for these products.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), India is the world’s largest producer of bananas. The country produced 33 million tonnes in 2023, followed by China with 12 million tonnes and Indonesia with 8.7 million tonnes.
