Egypt expands mental health services for older people

Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population announced the expansion of mental health services for the elderly, as well as activities to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS. The country has 24 centres and hospitals specialising in mental health, which have provided more than 15,000 health services through outpatient geriatric psychiatry clinics.

 

As part of efforts to improve the quality of life of the elderly, the Ministry of Health plans to open a new geriatric psychiatry hospital in Medical City in New Alamein. In addition, the Department of Geriatric Psychiatry is conducting special training programmes for doctors, psychologists, social workers, and nurses who care for elderly patients.

 

The Ministry also announced that 15,227 health services have already been provided in outpatient geriatric psychiatry clinics.
