In a move aimed at strengthening ties and boosting tourism and trade, India is prepared to introduce direct flights from Russia to two of its most popular destinations – Goa and Mumbai. These flights will be operated by Aeroflot, the flagship carrier of Russia, and are part of a broader effort to enhance civil aviation links between the two countries.
Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, emphasised that the exact launch date of these flights will depend on the commercial viability of the routes. “We are fully prepared to open new flight routes between Russia and India,” stated Ambassador Kumar. “The initiation of these routes is contingent upon Aeroflot’s readiness, but our focus is on flights to Mumbai and Goa, two destinations that hold significant importance for both business and leisure travellers.”
Ambassador Kumar also revealed that discussions are ongoing to increase the frequency of flights between Russia and India, with the possibility of adding routes from other Russian cities such as Sochi and Kazan. “We are ready to accommodate any requests from Russian airlines, particularly Aeroflot, to expand their flight schedules and capacity between our two countries,” he added.
This expansion of air connectivity comes at a time when both nations are seeking to strengthen their strategic partnership across various sectors, including tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. The move is expected to further facilitate travel for Russian tourists to Goa, a highly sought-after holiday destination, and Mumbai, India’s financial hub. The Eastern Economic Forum, held from September 3rd to 6th at the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, is focusing on creating new opportunities for international cooperation.
Under the theme “The Far East – 2030: Joining Efforts, Creating Opportunities,” this year’s forum addresses key global challenges and opportunities through thematic blocks such as “New Contours of International Cooperation”, “Transport and Logistics: New Routes”, and “Technologies of Independence.” As India continues to work closely with Russia to enhance connectivity and bilateral relations, the introduction of these direct flights will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for deeper economic and cultural ties.
