Indian Military Commends AK-203 Assault Rifle: A Testimony to Indo-Russian Defence Collaboration

The Indian Armed Forces have expressed strong approval of the Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifles, which are produced under the auspices of the Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture that stands as a symbol of the enduring defence partnership between India and Russia. Major General Sudhir Kumar Sharma, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of IRRPL, highlighted the widespread satisfaction among Indian military personnel with the AK-203’s advanced technological features and ergonomic design.

During a recent interview, Major General Sharma reflected on the feedback from soldiers and commanders who have integrated the AK-203 into their operations. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive. The Kalashnikov series has long been celebrated for its reliability, and the AK-203 continues this legacy with significant technological advancements. Our troops, especially those deployed in the northern and eastern theatres, have praised its performance,” he remarked.

To date, 35,000 units of the AK-203 have been delivered to the Indian Armed Forces, primarily benefiting the Army, with the Air Force and Navy expected to receive their consignments soon. “Nearly 95% of our orders are from the Indian Army, with the remainder allocated to the Air Force and Navy. The next batch will likely be earmarked for these services,” Sharma added.

The AK-203, a critical asset for units engaged in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, has become a standard weapon within India’s armed forces. Major General Sharma also underscored the importance of maintaining quality as the production process becomes increasingly indigenised. “As we move towards 100% indigenisation, it is imperative that we sustain the high standards that have earned such positive feedback. The quality of the AK-203 must remain uncompromised,” he cautioned. Drawing on his extensive 36-year career in the Indian Army, Major General Sharma expressed his pride in the longstanding military collaboration with Russia. “I have operated a range of Russian equipment, from helicopters to artillery and the iconic AK-47. This partnership is a source of pride, and the continued success of the AK-203 project exemplifies the strength of our bilateral defence ties,” he noted.

Production of Kalashnikov Rifles in India The Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited, established in March 2019 following an announcement by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, represents a significant milestone in India’s defence manufacturing sector. Situated in Korwa, Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, this facility is the first outside Russia to produce the AK-203 variant of the Kalashnikov assault rifle. This joint venture between Rosoboronexport and Kalashnikov Concern of Russia’s Rostec State Corporation underlines the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations.

The AK-203, first unveiled at Defexpo India 2020, offers several enhancements over its predecessors, including an ergonomic Magpul buttstock, a more comfortable pistol grip, and a reinforced receiver cover. Additionally, the rifle is equipped with a Picatinny rail, allowing for the integration of various sights and tactical accessories, thus meeting the evolving needs of modern combat operations. This joint venture is a testament to the successful collaboration between India and Russia in the defence sector, paving the way for future advancements in military technology and production.
