The Green Legacy Initiative (GLI) plays a key role in enhancing food security and promoting sustainable development in Ethiopia, said Fitsum Assefa, Ethiopia’s Minister of Planning and Development. This is reported by Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), a partner of TV BRICS. The Ministry of Agriculture notes that GLI is helping to address climate change and restore natural resources, which increases agricultural productivity and enhances food security.
GLI has increased Ethiopia’s forest area from 17.2 per cent to 23.6 per cent in the last five years, and the country has already planted 7.5 billion trees under the initiative. GLI is also improving the ecosystem, creating new jobs, and expanding ecotourism potential. The programme stimulates national efforts to create green jobs and increase hydropower supply by promoting renewable energy.
