Brazil develops initiative to introduce quotas for women CEOs of state-owned companies

The government led by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva plans to introduce a quota policy to favour the presence of women in senior positions in state-owned companies.

The initial proposal is to establish a minimum quota for women’s participation on company boards. This is reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS. According to a survey conducted by the ministry, the representation of women in management positions in state-owned companies has increased significantly in recent years.

While at the end of the previous government’s administration, the proportion of women in management was 14 per cent, by December 2023, it had risen to 21,49 per cent. In addition, the number of women on boards has also increased, from 20 per cent to 24 per cent.

This initiative is aimed at promoting gender equality in the corporate environment and reflects the Lula government’s commitment to equal opportunities. The introduction of a minimum quota for women in leadership positions aims to ensure more balanced and diverse representation, contributing to a more inclusive and representative organisational culture.
