Russian State Duma sees the potential of BRICS in formation of common principles of natural resource management

BRICS countries can play an important role for Russia in forming common principles of resource management, said Dmitry Kobylkin, Chairman of the Committee on Ecology, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the State Duma.

The speaker pointed out that Russia needs a new strategy for the transition from extraction to technological sovereignty. In his opinion, the key areas of work include attracting investment in geological exploration, creating domestic financial institutions to ensure supplies and settlements for minerals and hydrocarbons, organising a single BRICS technology bank, preparing an inter-sectoral strategy to achieve sustainable development goals, and others. Dmitry Kobylkin reminded that the BRICS countries have the world’s dominant raw material base and are extremely promising for co-operation.

“There is no doubt that the next decade will see tectonic shifts in the economic, energy, technological and other sectors of the world and our task is to become co-authors of these changes, strengthening the economic sovereignty of our countries. BRICS can become a centre of coordination in protecting and promoting national interests and forming agreed principles of resource management,” the words of the speaker are quoted on the website of the State Duma.

Russia has been the BRICS chair country since 1 January 2024 and conducts its work under the motto “Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security”.
