Salaries of civil servants in South Africa’s national and provincial departments will increase by 4,7 per cent from April 1, Public Service and Administration Minister Noxolo Kiviet said. She specified that the measure was part of a wage agreement signed by public sector unions in March last year, which called for a 7,5 per cent pay increase between 2023 and 2024. The minister added that the government was trying to prioritise fair and transparent remuneration for public servants to “attract and retain talented people committed to serving the nation”.

“This decision aligns with the commitment to affordable and accessible public services while recognising the hard work and dedication of public servants,” explained Kiviet.

South Africa’s Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana made a speech last month and said that about R251bn (US$13,2 billion) would be used to fund civil servants’ salaries. This was reported by Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.
